Segerstrom sets the pace, grinds out win over Katella

ANAHEIM — Segerstrom owned the line of scrimmage and put together long, time-consuming drives in a 14-7 victory over Katella in a Big 4 League game Thursday at Glover Stadium.

The Jaguars (1-0, 1-0) were playing their first game of the season after issues related to the coronavirus forced the cancellation of their first two games.

The Jaguars held Katella (2-1, 0-1) to their lowest point total of the season and were the first team to score against the Knights, who had shut out their first two opponents.

Segerstrom relied almost exclusively on an effective ground game, which was led by running back Nathan Tagaloa and quarterback Frankie Gonzalez.

Tagaloa scored both of the Jaguars’ touchdowns and both on 5-yard runs that capped long drives.

Gonzalez, who is built more like a fullback, had 10 carries for 96 yards.

Four of Gonzalez’s runs resulted in first downs, including a 48-yard run that set up Segerstrom’s second touchdown.

Katella opened the game with a 49-yard drive but came up empty when the Jaguars blocked Anthony Favila’s 35-yard field goal attempt.

The Jaguars took over and put together a 12-play, 79-yard drive that was capped by Tagaloa’s first touchdown run.

“One of the things we work on is controlling the ball and sustaining drives at practice,” Segerstrom coach Joseph Tagaloa said. “As crazy as it sounds, we run 20-play drives … and we just get used to having to grind and continue to work for every yard.”

Katella tied the score early in the second quarter on a Duante Bell’s 26-yard scoring pass to Jonathan Mota.

Segerstrom then put together a drive almost identical to its first one with Tagaloa closing out a 77-yard, nine-play drive with his second touchdown run.

The Jaguars arguably won the game in the third quarter, when they maintained possession for the entire 12 minutes.

And even though the drive stalled at the Katella 13-yard line it pinned the Knights deep in their own territory.

The Jaguars held the Knights to three-and-outs on their three fourth quarter possessions.

“We didn’t get in the end zone as much as we would have liked, but we were able to control the ball,” Coach Tagaloa said. “That kind of takes rhythm away from their offense.”

The Jaguars avenged a 22-17 loss to Katella that came in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 10 playoffs in 2019.
