LA HABRA – As Sonora headed into the fourth quarter of Friday’s boys basketball game against La Habra, Raiders coach Mike Murphy took a suggestion from one of his seniors.
Not only did Ian Jones call the right play, but his shot was on, as he scored 16 of his 29 points in the final quarter to lead the Raiders to a come-from-behind 62-57 victory over the Highlanders in a Freeway League game at La Habra High.
“Not only was he phenomenal with his jumper, but he was the one that said, ‘Coach, we have to run this play,” Sonora coach Mike Murphy said. “If we run this play (Dribble) I’m going to be open in the gap, and if I’m not open, the corners will be open,’ and he was exactly right.
“Not only was he our best player tonight, but he was our best coach because that play is what won the game tonight. Not only that he made his shots, but that he brought up the play to call it.”

Sonora (7-7, 2-0 in league) took a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Highlanders (4-4, 1-1) took control of the game in the second quarter thanks to Victor Covarrubias-Vargas’ hot hand.
Covarrubias-Vargas, who led La Habra with 18 points, kept the Highlanders in the lead, 42-40, going into the fourth quarter.
Sonora tried to find ways to slow him down in the second half.
“We made adjustments on who was guarding who,” Jones said. “We switched it up between a box-and-one and man-to-man defense. We had to stay composed and grab the boards and get the rebounds. We had to make huge baskets when it mattered the most.”

Jones also led the Raiders in rebounds with eight.
Daniel Esparza scored 19 points with seven rebounds for Sonora while Garrett Icenhower added seven points and seven rebounds.
Kai Smith scored 14 points for La Habra, Trindad Arciaga grabbed nine rebounds and Nick Berduo added eight points.
La Habra plays Buena Park on Wednesday, April 28. Sonora will take on La Serna on Saturday, April 24.
“We just have to come out and play the right way and play hard,” Esparza said. “We have to watch some film on them and just go all out.”
