Mater Dei too long, too strong for Orange Lutheran

SANTA ANA – Mater Dei’s boys basketball team has been too long and too strong for all of its opponents.

Orange Lutheran was the latest team to fall victim to the Monarchs’ advantages.

Mater Dei’s “Big Three” of seniors Wilhelm Breidenbach, Nick Davidson and Harrison Hornery combined for 52 points in the Monarchs’ 68-46 win over the Lancers in a Trinity League game Friday at Mater Dei High.

Davidson, 6-foot-8 and 218 pounds, scored a game-high 19 points with seven rebounds. Hornery (6-10, 230) scored 17 with a game-leading 11 rebounds and Breidenbach (6-9, 210) scored 16 with four rebounds.

Their quick interior passing created many baskets. One of the three would get the ball inside, Orange Lutheran would double team that Monarch, and another Monarch cutting through the lane would catch a quick pass for a layup.

“We work on that a lot,” Breidenbach said. “Obviously we have three really good ‘bigs.’ Being able to share the ball with one another is important.”

Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight said that because all three players have college scholarships in hand — Breidenbach signed with Nebraska, Davidson with Nevada and Hornery with USC – it’s natural for them to play unselfishly.

“They don’t need to score 20 every night so they can get to the school they want to go to,” said McKnight.

Friday’s win was career victory No. 1,170 for McKnight. He is the only coach in California high school basketball history with more than 1,000 wins. Mater Dei’s Kevin Kiernan is the state record-holder in girls basketball coaching wins with 813.

Mater Dei, No. 1 in the Orange County top 25, is 9-0 overall and 2-0 in league. No. 5 Orange Lutheran is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in league.

The Monarchs’ large inside presence is effective defensively, too. Orange Lutheran shot 29 percent from the field while Mater Dei made 51 percent of its shots.

Mater Dei had a 24-22 lead at halftime. The Monarchs scored the first 10 points of the third quarter and took a 43-32 lead into the fourth. They quickly pushed the lead to 17 points early in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Seth Brown led Orange Lutheran with 16 points and made three 3-pointers.

Mater Dei, No. 2 in the CalHiSports.com state rankings (Sierra Canyon is No. 1) plays at home Saturday, April 24 against county No. 16 Los Alamitos and is home Monday against county No. 4 Fairmont Prep.

The Lancers, whose other loss this season was to state No. 7 Damien, plays at county No. 12 Pacifica Christian on Saturday, April 24 and is home against No. 2 Santa Margarita on Wednesday, April 28.
