The Angels had hoped Mike Trout would be able to be in the lineup Friday and again Saturday. Now they’re hoping for Sunday.
Trout, who was hit in the left elbow by a pitch Thursday, was not in the Angels lineup again Saturday.
“He’s close, just sore, just inordinately sore from being hit there,” Manager Joe Maddon said before Saturday’s game in Houston. “When we left last night, I thought there was a chance for him to play today. So I texted with (head athletic trainer) Adam Nevala this morning and he said that in talking to Mike, he still might need another day. It’s better. But he still feels a little painful when he swings the bat or just creates that movement. So we’re gonna give it another day.”
Asked if the injured list was a possibility, Maddon said: “I don’t believe so. It’s all been about kind of a day-to-day thing until that swelling really dissipates and he feels comfortable swinging the bat again.”
Maddon said he would check on Trout in the middle of Saturday afternoon’s game to see if he could pinch hit.
The Angels also did not yet activate catcher Max Stassi or outfielder Juan Lagares from the injured list, even though both were expected to be ready any day.
“Just a little bit sore from their work,” Maddon said. “Trying to get back, they were a little bit more sore than they had anticipated. So we pushed it back a little bit.”
Maddon said they still could be activated any day.
THAT’S TWO
Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo bunted for a hit against the Angels’ shift Tuesday night, and on Friday night Houston Astros lefty Michael Brantley did the same thing.
Maddon said he knows Gallo likes to do that on the first pitch, so he blamed himself for not having the defense ready, but in Brantley’s case he said the Angels “left it open.”
Both times Mike Mayers has been on the mound. Mayers is tough on left-handed hitters because of his cutter.
“Those lefties know how tough he is, so I would imagine that Brantley saw Gallo do the same thing and chose to do it himself,” Maddon said. “It was just a good play on his part.”
Maddon said it’s not to the point that they’d change their defense.
“You don’t really want to just change it blankedly for one or two plays,” Maddon said. “I just think that it just seems to be a Mayers thing that we need to keep an eye on with lefties.”
MORE IGLESIAS?
Maddon believes one of the issues with Raisel Iglesias is simply that he hasn’t pitched enough.
Iglesias has pitched just seven innings so far this season, allowing six earned runs. He’s blown two saves and lost another game when he entered in a tie.
“The opportunities haven’t been there enough,” Maddon said a night after Iglesias gave up three runs in the 10th in a heartbreaking loss. “His workload has been inconsistent regarding number of times out there. I don’t know if we have to just get him out there, bring him in earlier in the game, if necessary, in a certain night, not just worry about it.
“He just needs to pitch. He’s still the closer. I’m not suggesting anything. But I just think that we need to get him out there as often as we can.”

Shohei Ohtani threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday and had no issues with blisters, Maddon said. Ohtani is scheduled to pitch Monday against the Rangers in Arlington. Maddon is still undecided if Ohtani will hit Sunday or when he pitches Monday. …
The Angels designated infielder Jack Mayfield for assignment in order to put left-hander Jose Suarez back on the 40-man roster. Suarez had been removed from the 40-man roster for unspecified reasons. Teams are allowed to remove players from the 40-man roster when they are unavailable for COVID-related reasons, but they generally don’t disclose that is why they are unavailable. …
The roster had been full because left-hander José Quijada was activated from the restricted list Wednesday. Quijada was placed on the restricted list when he arrived late to spring training because of visa issues.
