IRVINE — Foothill continued its hot streak with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Tustin on Tuesday, the eighth consecutive win for the Knights.
The Knights, who are ranked No. 6 in Orange County, have scored 66 runs in their last five games and have scored at least seven runs in every game during the winning streak.
“I feel like we are rounding into shape, and as odd as it may sound I don’t feel like we’ve played a complete game yet,” Foothill coach Chris Price said. “We still have areas we need to improve on. It’s going to be a tough road ahead with conference play coming.”

Foothill (11-2) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Luke Sampson and Brady Schrank each reached base and executed a double steal to put them both into scoring position. Noe Novella drove in Sampson with a single and Brady Ashworth hit a sacrifice fly to score Schrank.
That run support was enough for Carson Case, who got his second win of the season on the mound. He threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit, one run and struck out three.
A key moment in the game came in Tustin’s half of the fourth inning. With a runner on second base and one out, Price turned to relief pitcher Gavin Soriano. He struck out the next two Tustin hitters to strand the tying run on second base.
Soriano was outstanding in relief, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run with six strikeouts.
“The last few outings he’s done a really great job,” Price said of Soriano. “He’s a high-energy guy who was fantastic. He made the pitches he needed to make, especially late in the count.”
Foothill added two runs in the fifth with small ball tactics. Ashworth drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Ramon Ramirez. The runners advanced on a passed ball and Ashworth scored on a sacrifice fly.
Ramirez advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.
“We try to score runs with bunts and taking bases,” Price said. “We work on that all the time. It’s a constant conversation we have, and sometimes you have to execute the little things like that to win games.”
The Knights added three more runs with a run-scoring double by USC-signee Austin Overn and a two-run triple by Aiden Taurek.
Overn went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice fly, a double, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Tustin (8-7) stranded eight runners on base and struggled to get timely hits. Juan “Johnny” Esparza drove in both runs for the Tillers and Johnny Olivares had two hits.
Riley Kelly, who was also the quarterback of Tustin’s football team, was the best pitcher for the Tillers, throwing three innings and only allowing one earned run.
The game was initially scheduled to be played at Angel Stadium last week, but was moved to the Great Park in Irvine due to COVID-19 restrictions at Angel Stadium.
Foothill will host Esperanza on Wednesday in a Century Conference crossover game.
