Cypress gets hot at the right time, rallies to beat Tustin

ANAHEIM — Tustin appeared to be in control early in its Empire League game against Cypress on Friday at Western High School. But the Centurions flipped the momentum in the third quarter and kept right on rolling.

The Centurions, who were trailing at halftime, scored 21 points in the third quarter and 35 in the second half to defeat the Tillers 41-27.

With two games remaining, the Centurions (3-0, 3-0) are in good position to win the Empire League.

Quarterback Riley Kelly threw three first-half touchdown passes, lifting the Tillers (2-2, 2-1) to a 20-7 halftime lead.

Kelly threw a 13-yard touchdown to Gage Grant, a 27-yard scoring pass to Josiah Aiono and a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mark Rivas.

Rivas also returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown late in the game for the Tillers’ only second half score.

The Tillers were held to one completion for minus-3 yards in the second half.

Cypress quarterback Dylan Eldredge, who completed 16 of 29 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns, led his team’s comeback.

Eldredge had a hand in four of the Centurions’ five second-half scores.

Eldredge threw scoring passes of 37 and 9 yards to Matthew Morrell, a 26-yard touchdown to Trevor Monteleone and ran for a 3-yard score on a fourth-down play that surprised everyone in the stadium

The Centurions also grabbed three interceptions.

Monteleone had two interceptions to go with his touchdown catch and Corey Anesi came up with a pick in the fourth quarter.

The Centurions’ remaining games are against Pacifica at home and on the road against Kennedy.

Tustin finishes with a home contest against Kennedy and a road game against Valencia.

If the Tillers and Cypress finish with identical league records, the Centurions would own the tiebreaker.
