TUSTIN — The Tustin offense kicked into high gear early in the team’s Empire League football opener against Crean Lutheran on Thursday night at Tustin High School.
The Tillers scored touchdowns on their first four possessions on their way to a 42-14 victory.
Junior quarterback Riley Kelly, who was sidelined in the second quarter off the Tillers’ loss to Foothill last week, completed 11 of 15 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns.
Wide receiver Dominick Flores had four receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns for Tustin (1-1, 1-0).
Josaiah Aiono scored on a 74-yard run on the Tillers’ first play from scrimmage.
On their next possession, the Tillers faced a third-and-11 from their own 8 when Kelly connected with Mission Viejo transfer Armon Fuller for a 92-yard score.
The Tillers made the score 21-0 on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Flores.
Kelly then ran for a 10-yard score to put the Tillers ahead 28-0 in the second quarter.
Tustin led 34-0 in the third quarter when a 10-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Rogers to Jack Fairchild put the Saints (1-1,0-1) on the scoreboard.
Tustin coach Anthony Lopez, who usually calls the plays on offense, was serving a one-game suspension for being ejected from last week’s game. Athletic Director Thomas Giebe filled in as head coach.
“We kind of preach next guy up to our athletes and to our players and that applied to us as coaches this week,” Giebe said. “Coach Lopez is our play caller, so Coach (Brandon) Pratt, our head JV coach, called plays tonight. I just kind of managed what I could manage for the guys. Luckily, we came out on top. We started fast and didn’t let up.”
