Santa Ana Unified wins historic award for restoring, preserving 114-year-old building

The Santa Ana Unified School District recently was recognized for restoring and preserving a historic building that once helped power the Red Car railway system in Orange County.

The city’s Historic Resources Commission awarded the district the 2020 Historic Preservation Award for its work on what once was the Pacific Electric Sub-Station No. 14.

Today, the building that sits on the campus of Garfield Elementary serves as a wellness center, offering classes and resources to students and parents.

The structure is considered architecturally and historically significant as the oldest standing structure feature of the Pacific Electric system in Orange County, according to Alberta Christy, the commission’s chairperson who presented district officials with an award last month.

“(It’s) one of the highest awards we can give,” Christy told district superintendent Jerry Almendarez during the presentation, which was videotaped by city officials. “You have set the bar high for restoration. And we can congratulate you for preserving our history.”

The restoration added a new roof, rebuilt a tower, transformed two storage rooms into a restroom and created a kitchen.

The landmark property is listed in the California Registry of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. Locally, it’s also part of the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties – number 355.
