San Juan Hills prevails in high-scoring battle with Capistrano Valley

MISSION VIEJO — San Juan Hills showed how versatile its offense is capable of being in a 52-41 win over Capistrano Valley in a nonleague game Friday at Capistrano Valley High.

The Stallions (2-0) used the deep pass and their ground-and-pound running game to overpower the injury-plagued Capo Valley defense.

San Juan Hills quarterback Hudson Jones completed 13 of 20 passes for 234 yards and four touchdown passes, all to receiver Cole Monach, who caught six passes for 133 yards.

When the Cougars’ star defensive tackle Luke Meyer left the game with a leg injury, the Stallions shifted their focus to the running game. Brayden Burns rushed for 175 yards on 32 carries and had three touchdowns.

Chase Schmidt blocked a Capo Valley field goal attempt when the game was scoreless midway through the first quarter. The block set up a 37-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Monach to give them a 7-0 lead.

Capo Valley (0-2) responded with a touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Dartanyon Moussiaux to tie the game at seven.

Jones and Monach connected again from 37 yards out for a touchdown. The Stallions ran a trick play to Dashiel Ross to regain the lead at 15-7.

After exiting the game with a leg injury, Moussiaux returned on a fourth down and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Owen Taylor to cut the Stallions’ lead to one.

Burns ran for a 4-yard touchdown and Jones threw a third touchdown pass to Monach to put San Juan Hills up 29-14 with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Moussiaux led the Cougars on a two-minute drill capped by a touchdown pass to Dane Benedix to make the score 29-21 at halftime.

The second half had just as much scoring as the first half. Burns ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, and Cooper Miltenberger made a 23-yard field goal.

Moussiaux ran for his second rushing touchdown of the game in the third quarter and threw two touchdown passes in the second half, one to Benedix and one to Taylor.

Moussiaux completed 28-54 passes for 367 yards with six total touchdowns. Benedix caught 13 passes for 158 yards and Taylor caught seven for 123 yards.

San Juan Hills opens South Coast League play against San Clemente on Friday, April 2. Capo Valley will travel to El Toro for its Sea View League opener.
