WESTMINSTER — During one juncture of the nonleague football game between Laguna Beach and Marina on Thursday at Westminster High School, the host Vikings scored touchdowns on four consecutive offensive plays.
That’s the kind of a night it was for the Vikings, who came away with a 59-40 victory.
After losing to Huntington Beach, 42-6, in the first game of the season, the Vikings (2-1) have tallied 93 points over their last two games.
“Huntington Beach was a wake-up call,” Marina coach Jeff Turley said. “We kind of needed that. Our first-string guys woke up and were a little more serious and worked a little harder in practice in getting the little things right, and that has shown up in the last two games.”

The first touchdown came on a 3-yard run by Brant Riederich on a first-and-goal play that was set up by a 38-yard run by Dane Brenton two plays earlier.
Then came the four consecutive touchdowns.
Two were set up by back-to-back interceptions from Gavin Del Toro and Wyatt McClour, respectively, which the Vikings converted into two touchdowns on ensuing first-down plays.
The scoring streak started with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jack Miller to McClour, who wound up finishing with four catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns to go with his interception.
Miller then connected with Dane Brenton for a 21-yard touchdown on the play following Del Toro’s interception.
Next came a 7-yard touchdown run from Riederich followed by a 23-yard scoring run by Gavin Dykema.
After being shut out in the first half, the Breakers (1-2) tried to make game of it with 40 second-half points.
But the Vikings responded to four of the Breakers’ six second-half touchdowns with a touchdown of their own to stay comfortably ahead.
“Hopefully, we can finish the year like this,” Dykema said of the victory.
Jackson Golden had a standout performance for Laguna Beach, rushing for 142 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Golden’s three touchdowns came on consecutive carries.
After completing just one pass for 6 yards in the first half, Breakers quarterback Will Bingham wound up completing eight of 23 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
