SAN CLEMENTE – San Clemente overcame a surprising early deficit to beat Capistrano Valley 35-24 on Friday in a nonleague game at San Clemente High.
The Tritons trailed by 14 in the second quarter and didn’t score until there were under two minutes remaining in the first half. Penalties were the story of the game and both teams hindered multiple offensive drives. Each team had over 115 yards in penalties.
Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence for former San Clemente assistant coach Joe Wood, who passed away recently. San Clemente took the field with 10 men to honor Wood and Capistrano Valley declined the penalty which was followed by applause.
“We had a bit of an adrenaline dump early in the game, and to be honest everyone was a little emotional from the tribute to Coach Wood,” San Clemente coach Jaime Ortiz said of the slow start. “Second half we came out with a purpose.”
The tide turned in the second half for San Clemente (1-0), which was behind 14-7 at halftime.
Zach Brunson intercepted a Capo Valley pass at the Cougars 39-yard line, and on the ensuing play James Bohls ran for a 39-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14.
Bohls had 85 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Capo Valley regained its lead on a 30-yard field goal by Armin Kazemi to put the Cougars ahead 17-14.
San Clemente responded with three unanswered touchdowns to take over the lead for good. Lachlan van Rosmalen, a transfer from St. John Bosco, threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to BYU-signee Bentley Redden to give the Tritons their first lead of the game at 21-17.
Van Rosmalen threw two more touchdown passes to Anthony Hall and Eaton Cattich, respectively. Hall caught five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Van Rosmalen completed 15 of 29 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns in his varsity debut.
“I thought he played well,” Ortiz said of van Rosmalen. “He went head-to-head with a quarterback who is a returning starter for Capo and held his own. He made some good throws.”
The Tritons’ defense held Capo Valley to 13 yards rushing and had four sacks. Kanious Vaughn had two sacks and Ryland Swarthout had multiple tackles for a loss.
Capo Valley quarterback Dartanyon Moussiaux was very active and kept the Cougars in the game. Moussiaux completed 25 of 47 passes for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
He threw a touchdown to Dane Benedix to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. Benedix, a sophomore, had 67 yards receiving on six catches.
Moussiaux led the Cougars on a scoring drive to end the game, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Justin Richardson.
San Clemente will host Aliso Niguel in a nonleague game on Friday, March 26. Capo Valley will play San Juan Hills in its home opener on Friday, March 26.
