Angels’ hitters besides Shohei Ohtani do little in his two-way debut

THE GAME: The Angels managed just five hits – two of them by their starting pitcher – in a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Sunday at the Peoria Sports Complex.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Shohei Ohtani gave up one run in four innings, striking out five. It was the first time in a major league regular season or exhibition game that Ohtani had hit and pitched in the same game. … Closer Raisel Iglesias worked a perfect inning. He has allowed two earned runs in six innings this spring. … Right-hander Ty Buttrey was charged with three runs (two earned) on four hits. … Right-hander Chris Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning, working around a walk and a double. He finished the inning with a called third strike on a 98 mph fastball. Rodriguez has allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings this spring, with 10 strikeouts.

HITTING REPORT: Ohtani had two hits, a single and a second hit off the left-field fence. Ohtani slid off the bag and was tagged out, or he would have had a double. … Albert Pujols hit a homer, his first of the spring, in the ninth inning. He also singled, improving to 13 for 33 this spring. Pujols, 41, was the first Angels player to play a whole game this spring. Manager Joe Maddon said Pujols “wanted to hang in there to get that last at-bat and he didn’t miss it.” … Justin Upton punched a single into right field… Mike Trout was hitless in two at-bats, including a hard lineout to right field. He also walked. Trout is 5 for 25 this spring. … Anthony Rendon was also 0 for 2 with a walk. He hit a popup with one out and the bases loaded in the third inning. Rendon is also 5 for 25 this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Pujols went to the ground to field a ball on the first base line and flipped it to Iglesias covering the bag. … Right fielder Dexter Fowler dropped a routine fly ball for a three-base error, leading to a three-run inning for the Padres.
