GARDEN GROVE — Orangewood Academy’s season-long quest to build on-court chemistry reached new heights Saturday night.

The Spartans hope their ascent isn’t over.

Orangewood Academy unleashed several highlight-worthy assists, along with eight 3-pointers, to defeat visiting Bishop Montgomery 74-60 in the Division I regional semifinals of the CIF State SoCal girls basketball playoffs.

“Hopefully we can ride this thing out,” Spartans coach Leslie Aragon said. “I think this is the best game we’ve played offensively all year.”

No. 2 seeded Orangewood Academy (24-9) will appear in its first regional final since 2017 when it plays host to No. 4 Windward (22-10) on Tuesday. The Spartans will attempt to reach the state championship game for the first time.

Windward, a three-time state champion, beat top-seeded Rosary 80-72 in overtime in the other semifinal Saturday behind 27 points by Skye Belker.

“I’m pretty confident that we can get a win,” said Orangewood Academy junior guard/forward Jayionne Brown, who had 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in just missing a triple-double. “We love to play with each other.”

The Spartans’ chemistry showed as they capped their second victory against the Knights (19-7) this postseason with assists by Hannah Stines, Dhymond Zambrana and Brown for layups.

Stines finished with a team-high 23 points, including three 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, four assists and five blocks.

The Washington-bound senior teamed with Brown to run the point guard.

Orangewood Academy feature a first-year starting lineup with freshmen guards Alissa Belen (three 3-pointers) and Vicky Om (three points) joining transfers Brown, Brya Arroyo-Gillcrese (eight points) and Stines, a returning starter who attended Troy earlier this year.

The Spartans’ bench, outscored 19-17 by the Bishop Montgomery reserves, features the return of injured Sofia Saldivar (eight points) and transfer Zambrana (nine points).

“That’s why we’ve been like ‘We’re almost there’ … because we’ve had to add so many pieces on the fly, ” Aragon said. “We’ve made a big effort to talk the girls about trusting each other.”

Stines closed the third quarter with a 3-pointer just before the buzzer for 59-36 lead but Bishop Montgomery center Chloe Williams led a fourth-quarter surge by the Knights.

The Tulsa-bound center scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the final period by making all eight of her shots from the floor, including two three-point plays. She was slowed earlier in the game by foul trouble.

Bishop Montgomery freshman guard Jordin Blackmon also opened the fourth with the Knights’ first 3-pointer. She finished with 11 points off the bench.
