Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kicked off the 78th annual Golden Globes on Sunday with a bicoastal opening duologue that got the show started and … not much more.
With Fey live from the Rainbow Room in New York City and Poehler live on stage at the Beverly Hilton, the Globes longtime home, the distance did them few favors in terms of the jokes and jabs.
“I’m here in New York City where indoor dining and outdoor muggings are back,” Fey cracked.
“And I’m here in District 7 New Angeles, and this is the 78th annual Hunger Games,” Poehler joined in.
Yeah, it was like that.
There was a gag about how they were still as close as ever — Fey stretched out an arm and someone in L.A. stroked Poehler’s head.
They made jokes about how much TV we’d all watched in the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, and how you can tell a movie on your TV from a TV show on your TV.
“In movies, it’s called human trafficking but on TV it’s called ’90 Day Fiance,’” Fey joked.
And more jokes about how the first responders at the tables in the Beverly Hilton were seated where normally the biggest stars in Hollywood would be.
“It’s just usually like Meryl Streep is so hammered, she can’t even remember what movie she’s nominated for,” Fey said.
They took some shots at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Globes each year, for its lack of Black members and possibly out of touch membership of somewhere around 90 men and women.
“We say around 90 because it’s rumored a couple of members are just ghosts, and the German member is just a sausage with a moustache drawn on its face,” Fey joked.
